NewsThe UAE has announced a Dh2 billion fund to help citizens restore houses destroyed by last week's record-breaking rains and following floods. A ministerial commission has been formed to analyze damages and allocate compensation. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, described this week's rainfall as "unprecedented". Over 200,000 distress calls from people were handled by the country's control rooms, "highlighting the scale of the damage caused to residential properties".
Over 17,000 security and emergency service workers responded as the UAE coped with the aftermath of the rains. Thousands of volunteers assisted these officials in rescuing individuals caught in the floods, directing traffic, and delivering crucial supplies to those unable to leave their homes.
A day after the rains, President Sheikh Mohamed declared that the UAE government's "top priority" is the safety and security of its inhabitants and communities. He had ordered authorities to investigate the country's infrastructure and mitigate the damage caused by the floods.
