Sustainability initiative - Dubai Can see a reduction in the usage of almost 18 million single-use plastic water bottles in just two years

In just two years since its inception, Dubai Can, a citywide sustainability effort, has reduced the use of over 18 million 500 ml single-use plastic water bottles. Dubai Can has established 50 public water stations at key sites across the city, including parks and well-known tourist attractions, with the help of its sponsors and partners. Water from these stations has been dispensed over nine million litres.

The Executive Council of Dubai Chairman, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, launched Dubai Can on February 15, 2022, with the goals of reducing the use of single-use plastic water bottles, enabling locals and visitors to actively participate in creating a more sustainable future, and protecting wildlife and the marine environment.

The effort is in line with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's goal of making the emirate a premier sustainable travel destination. He is the Vice-President, Prime Minister, and ruler of the United Arab Emirates. It is a component of larger initiatives to lessen the consumption of single-use plastics and promote a shift in perspective on sustainability among city dwellers and tourists.

In addition, Dubai Can's goals complement Dubai's commitment to assist the United Arab Emirates in achieving the UAE NetZero 2050 aims and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the Dubai 2040 Urban Masterplan.
