NewsThe Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) has awarded a contract to SkyPower Global, a UAE-based firm, to build a 200 megawatt sustainable energy plant in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The DRC Green Giant project, which will be divided into four parts, would cost $200 million (Dh734 million) in the first phase and generate 6,000 employment years, according to an interview with Kerry Adler, president and CEO of SkyPower, and Khaleej Times. He stated that the 1,000MW Solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) inked with the state-owned utility of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Société Nationale d'Electricité (SNEL), is contingent upon the completion of this 200MW Phase 1.
According to Adler, the project would be fully operational in 18 to 24 months and will contribute $700 million to the GDP of the African nation directly and indirectly. Félix Tshisekedi, the president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, hopes to significantly increase the nation's output of renewable energy, which would help to stimulate the African country's GDP by an estimated $2.3 billion and create about 30,000 work years.
According to Kerry Adler, the deal highlights AFC's crucial role in advancing sustainable energy solutions across the African continent.
