RTA is set to construct a track tailored for bicycles, scooters, and pedestrians, linking Al Sufouh to Dubai Hills via Hessa Street

As part of its efforts to make Dubai a bike-friendly city, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) plans to build a bike, scooter, and pedestrian-only track. This new route crosses Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road twice with two bridges, connecting Al Sufouh to Dubai Hills via Hessa Street.

The multi-use track is 13.5 km long and 4.5 m wide, with a 2.5 m wide path for scooter riders and cyclists and a 2 m wide path for walkers. In addition to servicing establishments in thriving neighborhoods like Al Barsha and Al Barsha Heights, it provides services to twelve distinct residential, commercial, and educational districts.

The Hessa Street Improvement Project runs 4.5 kilometers between the intersections of Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. It includes improvements to Sheikh Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, Al Asayel Street, and Al Khail Road, the four main crossroads along Hessa Street. Hessa Street's capacity will be doubled to 16,000 cars per hour in both directions with the lane width increased from two to four in each direction.

Two specially constructed bridges are part of the new track. The first bridge crosses Sheikh Zayed Road for 528 meters, and the second bridge crosses Al Khail Road for 501 meters. Every bridge has a width of five meters (3 meters for e-scooters and bicycles and two meters for pedestrians).

The surrounding landscapes served as inspiration for the engineering design of these bridges. Overlapping lines are used in the design of the bridge that spans Sheikh Zayed Road to represent themes of connectedness.

The bridge structure's open shape improves visibility and provides better views of the surroundings and nearby towers. In the meantime, the Al Khail Road bridge's design emulates the passage of the sun, producing streamlined lines and providing bicycles and pedestrians with a peaceful haven from the bustle of the street.

A vital part of the master plan for Dubai's cycling tracks, which aims to improve connectivity and construct new and larger bicycle routes around the emirate, is the cycling track that connects Al Sufouh and Dubai Hills.

By 2030, the plan intends to expand Dubai's bike routes from their present 544 km to 1,000 km in total length. Through Al Barsha, Dubai Hills, and Nad Al Sheba, this development will link coastal communities like Jumeirah, Al Sufouh, and Marina to external lines at Al Qudra, Seih Al Salam, and Nad Al Sheba.

By implementing first- and last-mile strategies, these tracks helped to promote cycling as a practical and ecological alternative form of transportation for both locals and tourists.

Improvements to Hessa Street's four principal intersections are part of the project. The first is the Sheikh Zayed Road Intersection, where traffic heading east from Sheikh Zayed Road to Hessa Street in the direction of Emirates Road will be served by the construction of a two-lane directional ramp that crosses over the Dubai Metro Red Line.

Enhancing the First Al Khail Street Intersection is the second. The current bridge will be widened from three to four lanes in each direction, and the signalized surface intersection's traffic flow will be improved.

The third is the Al Asayel Street Intersection's renovation. Along with improving traffic at the signalized surface intersection, it entails expanding the current bridge's two lanes to four lanes in each direction along Hessa Street.

Al Khail Road Intersection is the fourth intersection that has to be renovated. In order to accommodate northbound traffic from Hessa Street to Al Khail Road toward Sharjah, a two-lane directional ramp will be built.
