Nol is set to undergo an upgrade to an account-based system that uses central wallet technology

An account-based system utilising central wallet technology will replace Dubai's current card-based ticketing system, Nol, which will be implemented gradually and made available by the end of 2025 as per reports.

Artificial intelligence features like facial recognition will be part of the improved system. The users of the Nol system currently need to have a physical or digital card. The RTA has made it clear that this would go on after the launch of the new project. To link one or more cards, an account can be made. A digital payment system utilising centralised transit fare wallet technology will be made available by the system. An online service called a "digital wallet" is used to store electronic tickets and documents or to make electronic payments.

The RTA claims that the system guarantees a smooth transition between Dubai's various transit options. The new system offers several benefits, such as a significant upgrade in payment system technology, enhanced operating features, and customised services and goods.

Better data utilisation and analysis based on specifics such as travel origins and destinations is anticipated from the digital payment system.

More than 30 million Nol cards have been issued by the RTA since its founding in 2009. The average daily card usage in 2023 was close to 2.5 million Dh2 billion worth of payments. The use of Nol cards has made it easier for people to travel throughout the emirate and pay for public parking. The card's features were expanded in 2017 to include retail payment services as well as entry fees to a number of public and private businesses in Dubai.
