02 Mar 2024
NewsWTO members, at a high-level conference on Friday, decided to prolong the moratorium on electronic commerce tariffs for an additional two years, as per a document released on Friday. Every two years, ministerial conferences are conducted.
The decision is a major accomplishment for the MC13, which also witnessed in-depth debates on important topics influencing how trade will develop globally.
Countries do not levy customs tariffs on cross-border e-commerce transactions under a WTO moratorium. WTO members have agreed to regularly prolong the embargo since 1998. The most recent extension was decided upon in June 2022 at the last MC.
