Dubai's RTA started the study and design on Phase II of the authority's ITS Improvement and Expansion Project

Phase II of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai's Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) Improvement and Expansion Project is now in the study and design stages. By 2026, this second phase seeks to increase the main road network's coverage in the emirate from its present 60% to 100%. As a result, the system will cover a greater distance of road network—480 kilometers to 710 km.

The project's first phase saw the installation of 116 traffic surveillance cameras, increasing the total number of cameras to 311. To bring the total to 227 devices, the authority additionally placed 100 incident monitoring and vehicle counting devices.

Along with the installation of 115 trip time and speed measuring devices, the first phase of the project also involved the installation of 112 Variable Message Signs (VMS), which provide real-time information on road conditions. In addition, the authority installed 17 weather sensor stations, 660 km of electrical power cables, and an 820 km long fiber optic network.

The Dubai Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) Center at Al Barsha, one of the biggest and most advanced traffic control centers in the world, is used by RTA to manage traffic in the emirate. Along with Singapore and Seoul, the center uses cutting-edge technologies and traffic management systems to keep up with Dubai's growth and position it as one of the world's top ITS cities.

An essential center for traffic management in Dubai is the Dubai ITS Center. It has an integrated technology platform that collects vital data and offers intelligent services by utilizing big data, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, sophisticated communication systems, and a variety of monitoring devices.

The center manages the present and future road networks in Dubai and is equipped with an innovative traffic control system called "iTraffic," which is augmented with big data analysis tools and artificial intelligence (AI) technology to facilitate decision-making.
