Dubai announces ambitious plan to achieve carbon neutrality, targeting 50% reduction in emissions by the year 2030

Dubai has unveiled a bold strategy to become carbon neutral, with a 50% decrease in emissions by 2030 as the end goal. The new strategy, which is supported by a defined road map for achieving its net-zero target by 2050, will quicken the momentum it has gained in its shift towards renewable energy over the previous ten years.

The Executive Council of Dubai's Secretary General, Abdulla Mohammed Al Basti, reiterated Dubai's commitment to climate action and environmental sustainability in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement. He confirms that they are dedicated to working together with other international cities that have similar goals for climate action and sustainability. Under the direction of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, and the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Dubai is steadily establishing itself as a city that provides the highest quality of life in the world.

In an announcement that coincides with the UAE’s hosting of COP28, Dubai has announced its aim to double its carbon emission reduction, aiming for a 50% decrease by 2030. This ambitious goal is a testament to Dubai's dedication to a sustainable future, emphasizing environmental protection, biodiversity, conservation of resources, a substantial increase in renewable energy, and the advancement of a green and circular economy, added Al Basti.

Dubai has developed green financing structures, managed risks, and increased its local capacities to play a dynamic role in spearheading its energy transformation by cultivating relationships with top regional and global organisations in the clean energy sector. Mega clean power projects have been developed as a result of this strategy, which has also generated an appealing market for renewable technology and provided encouraging signals to clean energy investors. Exemplary initiatives completed by Dubai include the largest single-site solar power park in the world, the region's first hydropower plant, a waste-to-energy plant, a green hydrogen facility, and the manufacture of green aluminium.
