NewsIn the Meydan area of Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled a brand-new, 160-meter bicycle-only tunnel. With a 6.6m width, this tunnel has an hourly capacity of about 800 bicycles.
Opening this project is a part of RTA's initiatives to make Dubai a bicycle-friendly city, which calls for upgrading the cycling infrastructure and connecting it with both residential areas and famous attractions. Additionally, it promotes sports and leisure activities among locals and visitors and offers bikers a safe cycling environment that complies with the strictest safety standards.
In order to provide uninterrupted and unrestricted passage along the Meydan bike track, the project, which is a component of improving the infrastructure of Meydan junction, comprises converting the surface intersection of the cycling track with Meydan Street into a dedicated tunnel. The removal of the surface junction significantly minimises the amount of time riders must wait. By integrating the bikers Club and the Meydan and Nad Al Sheba community development initiatives with the track, it also benefits bikers.
The cycling track tunnel's design and construction were meticulously designed to meet the highest international standards, requirements, and technical recommendations. The interior of the tunnel is designed to resemble a plateau and hill scenery at dusk, and it has both day and night illumination to constantly provide riders with unhindered vision.
The development of the Meydan tunnel is a component of RTA's master plan for cycling lanes in Dubai as well as a general plan to build out and expand the network of bicycle lanes to link important locations of the emirate. By the end of 2026, this ambitious plan wants to extend Dubai's bike network to 819 kilometres.
