Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi launches the region’s first freshwater pearl oyster aquaculture project

The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) has started the region's first freshwater pearl oyster aquaculture operation in Al Faya.

This effort builds on the success of the Abu Dhabi Pearls Centre in Mirfa, which opened in 2007 to cultivate native pearl oysters. The new effort aims to introduce and cultivate new oyster species throughout the emirate.

The facility boasts a cutting-edge indoor aquaculture setup, with 10 units capable of producing up to 10,000 oysters each year. The project also includes a quarantine zone, as well as research and administrative facilities. To date, around 8,500 freshwater oysters have been cultured.
