Dubai is set to implement a significant new ban on single-use plastics starting next year, which will lead to substantial changes in takeaway services across the emirate. Beginning at midnight on Wednesday, January 1, a variety of products will be prohibited, including plastic straws, cups, and stirrers.
This follows a previous plastic ban on single-use bags that was introduced last summer, which outlawed bags thinner than 57 micrometres across the emirate. The rollout of the ban on single-use items was initially announced on the last day of 2023, with a phased approach extending through 2026, allowing businesses ample time to adjust to the new regulations.
The initiative aims to promote an eco-friendly lifestyle in Dubai, protect the environment, and support sustainable development. The second phase of the ban will involve the elimination of styrofoam food containers, plastic cotton swabs, and table covers.
