NewsThe Warsan Wastewater Treatment Plant's biogas-to-energy project was finished, the Dubai Municipality said on Thursday. The project is one of the municipality's initiatives for renewable energy that supports its strategic objective to convert its assets into environmentally friendly, long-lasting assets.
The biogas power plant is capable of producing 44,250 MWh of electricity per year. The project's daily power generating capacity of 6 MW will supply 50% of the operational requirements for the Warsan Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The municipality executed the project in collaboration with the private sector in accordance with the Dubai Government's guidelines to promote fruitful private-sector collaborations that result in practical answers to energy demands. By employing alternative energy sources, the project will help to provide sustainable solutions by further reducing yearly carbon emissions by 31,000 tonnes and lowering the plant's operating costs by Dh320 million over a 25-year period.
As a consequence of its treatment processes, the Warsan Wastewater Treatment Plant generates 57,000 cubic metres of biogas every day. The biogas power project will consume about 54,800 cubic metres of gas per day to generate 121 MWh of energy. The project is unique in that it has completely automated processes with more than 350 tools that continually watch over processes around-the-clock.
The plant is backed by Dubai's enormous sewage system, which includes 56 rainwater pumping stations in addition to 110 substations and 13 major pumping stations, and whose network connections reach more than 3 million metres in length. Two wastewater treatment facilities are also part of the system; one is located in Warsan and has a daily capacity of up to 325,000 cubic metres, while the other is located in Jebel Ali and has a daily capacity of up to 675,000 cubic metres.
