UAE is diversifying its power supplies by opening several wind farms across the country

The UAE is diversifying its electricity supply by establishing multiple wind farms nationwide, estimated to power more than 23,000 houses each year. A wind farm is a collection of wind turbines that use wind from the land or water to create power. Masdar, an Abu Dhabi-based sustainable energy corporation, makes all this possible. The project will have four different sites. The first wind farms will be located on Sir Bani Yas Island, Delma Island, Al Sila Island in Abu Dhabi, and Al Halah in Fujairah. Masdar has revealed that the project would also feature a solar farm on Sir Bani Yas Island.

It is the first time the UAE has introduced utility-scale wind power to its energy mix. Emirates Water and Electricity Company (Ewec) has inked a purchase deal with Masdar for the wind energy generated, which will be used inside the UAE power system. It comes as Dubai's Expo City prepares to host COP28, the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The conference will take place in Dubai from Thursday, November 30 to Tuesday, December 12, and will bring together politicians, scientists, and activists from across the world to review how the world is dealing with climate change. The event's focus will be on how nations across the world are performing in respect to the Paris Agreement, which established the aim of keeping global temperature rise under 2 degrees Celsius in 2016.
