NewsThe Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has granted a contract for the building of four bridges with a capacity of 17,600 cars per hour for the Garn Al Sabkha Street - Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project.
The project, which costs Dh374 million, cuts travel time by 40% between Garn Al Sabkha Street and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road in the direction of Al Qusais and Sharjah. The Garn Al Sabkha - Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Roads Intersection Improvement Project is part of the RTA's master plan to enhance major road corridors to the east and west, such as the Al Yalayis and Expo Roads, which were completed a few years ago. When finished, the project would cut travel time between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Al Yalayis Road in the direction of Jebel Ali Port by 70%.
As per RTA director–general and chairman, Mattar Al Tayer, this project is part of a larger effort to improve the Garn Al Sabkha Street Corridor, which connects the Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Roads." "Its goal is to ensure that traffic flows smoothly between Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, and Al Asayel Street.
The project will lower peak hour travel time from 20 minutes to 12 minutes. He added that this project includes the construction of four bridges. The first is a 960-metre bridge that connects Garn Al Sabkha and Al Asayel Streets. This two-lane bridge, which can accommodate 8,000 cars per hour in both directions, helps to ensure smooth traffic flow between Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. The second is a 660-metre two-lane bridge servicing traffic from Garn Al Sabkha Street westwards to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road northwards to Al Qusais and Sharjah. This bridge has a capacity of 3,200 cars per hour.
He stated that the third is a two-lane 700-meter bridge to improve traffic flow and eliminate overlapping traffic from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road heading north to Al Yalayis Road heading south to Jebel Ali Port. The bridge has a capacity of 3,200 cars per hour. The fourth is a 680-metre-long two-lane bridge that would enable smooth traffic flow and avoid overlapping traffic from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to the service road heading to Dubai Production City. "The bridge can handle 3,200 vehicles per hour. The project also comprises 7 km of roadworks to improve surface junctions on a service road adjacent to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, as well as street lighting, traffic signals and systems, rainfall drainage networks and irrigation system networks.
