Dubai’s RTA has replaced 14,400 traditional lighting units with eco-friendly LED lights

14,400 old lighting fixtures have been replaced with environmentally friendly LED lights by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). At least 39 road tunnels and bridges totaling a distance of 22.6 km were upgraded as part of this project. 39 tunnels' lighting was recently updated by RTA. The six-month project, entailed some of Dubai’s prominent road tunnels including the Airport Tunnel, Shindagha Tunnel, Dubai Mall Tunnel, and the Dubai World Trade Centre Tunnel,” said Maitha bin Adai, CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency, RTA.

"LED lighting units have a lot of environmentally beneficial qualities, such using 60% less energy than conventional lighting units and having a lifespan that may be up to 177% longer than that of previous lights. In comparison to standard lighting units, the new lights have a lifespan of 50,000 hours as opposed to 18,000 hours, which lowers the frequency of light replacements and lowers maintenance and operating expenses. Additionally, there is a 20% decrease in energy loss and heat emissions compared to conventional lights, which improves the effectiveness of both the lighting operating system for the units and the energy supply network for the tunnels, according to Bin Adai.

When installing the new lighting units, the RTA, according to Bin Adai, meticulously assessed the degree of brightness and colour clarity within Dubai's tunnels to guarantee that road users would have the best visibility possible, thereby improving traffic safety. These units support RTA and Dubai's objective of attaining environmental sustainability since they do not contain ecologically damaging substances, such as mercury present in conventional lights.

"RTA will keep enhancing its facilities and street lighting systems throughout Dubai by using cutting-edge technology that are compatible with the country's climatic and environmental circumstances. In order to protect these assets, it would also use sustainability principles, said Bin Adai.
