Dubai Police warns about the dangers of disclosing personal data to AI-based chatbots and apps

Dubai Police has issued a warning about the dangers of disclosing personal data to chatbots and AI-based apps like ChatGPT. The risks of depending too much on these AI technologies were emphasised by the authorities. Even while these technologies are frequently used for research, writing articles, and answering emails, the careless sharing of personal information with them might be harmful.

Many users now rely heavily on AI chatbots for research, content creation, and communication response. Many chatbots, like ChatGPT, have the capacity to gather and retain a significant quantity of personal information. Unaware that these AI technologies have "tremendous analytical capabilities and infinite memory," users may unintentionally divulge private information about their lives and thinking.

This information may be kept, examined, and even utilised improperly, violating someone else's privacy.

The Dubai Police caution that as AI technology advances, problems can surface even if there haven't been any instances of misuse thus far. Those in critical positions who would rather keep their information private are particularly vulnerable. Excessive dependence on chatbots may result in the transmission of private or sensitive information without due diligence or thought given to its possible consequences.

Young people are especially exposed to the consequences of AI misuse as reliance on chatbots can weaken cognitive abilities and critical thinking. Using AI for research and academic assignments without adequate supervision might result in plagiarism, cheating, and even exposure to biased and false material. As a result, kids could become unduly dependent on electronic devices, which could jeopardise their socialisation and growth.

Users should continue to exercise critical thought and check information from several sources. AI should be used as a supplementary tool to foster innovation rather than as a stand-alone fix. This will maintain cognitive capacities and facilitate efficient risk management.
