Dh1 million fine for UAE residents who post morally unethical content on social media

UAE citizens who violate the nation's tolerance and coexistence policy by posting and sharing morally repugnant and antisocial content on social media could be fined up to Dh1 million and imprisoned, according to attorneys.

According to UAE law, anyone who distributes, reposts, or shares anything that is forbidden is just as accountable as the original poster.

This week, the National Media Office (NMO) of the United Arab Emirates stated that social media users in the country must follow national values and the ideals of tolerance, respect, and coexistence.

It issued a warning against anything that disparages public people, friendly nations, or their societies.

According to Federal Decree-Law No. 55 of 2023 concerning Media Regulation and Cabinet Resolution No. (68) of 2024 Concerning the Executive Regulation for Federal Decree-Law No. (55) of 2023 Regulating the Media, people who break the law risk administrative fines of Dh1,000 to Dh1 million, which can double to Dh2 million for repeated violations; temporary closure of media establishments that violate the law for up to six months (subject to renewal); permanent closure of unlicensed media institutions; and revocation of licenses, permits, or approvals.
