‘Cartier, Islamic Inspiration and Modern Design’ exhibition hosted by Louvre Abu Dhabi showcases the influences of the Islamic arts on Cartier's designs

The Louvre Abu Dhabi's latest exhibition, "Cartier, Islamic Inspiration and Modern Design," illuminates the history of profound cross-cultural influence on the creative language of the high-end French brand. Exhibition directors Evelyne Posseme and Judith Henon-Raynaud stated, "This exhibition is the result of almost five years of research in archives, drawings, and photographs to discover the links between Cartier creations and Islamic art, and to identify the sources of inspiration."

They emphasised that the show provides an exploration into the origins of inspiration for some of the most avant-garde designs in French jewellery. "The exhibition helps us comprehend the significance of Islamic art discovery for artists in the early 1900s, and how this artistic influence was the source of many European masterpieces as well as a true fashion phenomenon."

In order to examine more than a century of artistic influence, the immersive exhibition brings together more than 400 pieces from the Louvre Abu Dhabi, partner museums, the Cartier Collection, and private collectors.

Visitors can explore the exhibition from 16 November 2023 to 24 March 2024.
