Several new traffic systems has been introduced by UAE authorities to prevent accidents

To reduce accidents and improve safety for both drivers and pedestrians, the UAE's authorities have implemented several innovative traffic systems. Also, additional penalties are being imposed for infractions that jeopardize traffic safety and security.

New Road alert system by Abudhabi Police

A new road alert system has been launched by the Abu Dhabi Police across highways in the UAE Capital. The radar-like sensors have been placed beside the roadways to warn motorists of accidents or bad weather.

Different colors flash on the system to alert drivers.

- Red and blue: These warn motorists of an accident ahead.

- Yellow: Weather alert for potentially dangerous circumstances including fog, dust, or rain.

The smart speed limit in Sharjah – near school zones, residential areas

School zones, residential areas, and pedestrian crossings all have smart speed restriction signs erected by the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority. An intelligent speed-detecting mechanism powers the interactive signage. The posted speed limit is located at the top of the signage. It continuously records the speed of moving cars. The sign shows the real speed in green along with a happy emoji if the car is travelling inside the speed limit. If not, a sad emoji and a red speed indicator warn the motorist to slow down.

In UAE, speed restrictions for school zones range from 30 to 40 kph, with penalties of Dh300 to Dh3,000 depending on how fast the driver exceeds the limit. The speed restrictions in residential areas range from 25 to 40 kph.

Umm Al Quwain - new solar-powered, automatically controlled radars

On April 3 of this year, the Umm Al Quwain Police installed new solar-powered, automatically operating radars to watch for and ticket drivers who fail to stop at pedestrian crossings. The radars were turned on, according to the police, to lessen the amount of run-over collisions and accompanying losses of life and property brought on by certain drivers who do not stop at pedestrian crossings. Drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians will be fined Dh500 and given six black points under the traffic laws.

Integrated traffic systems with other GCC countries

Authorities unveiled plans in February to connect Bahrain and Qatar and the UAE's traffic networks on their own. The information sharing on traffic offences committed by drivers is made possible by this new integrated system.
