DEWA has provided smart machines to recycle plastic bottles in some of its buildings

NewsIn certain of its buildings, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has installed intelligent recycling equipment for plastic bottles. This is in keeping with its commitment to attaining Net Zero by 2050 and its aim to become a worldwide leading sustainable inventive organisation. It places a high priority on environmental sustainability across all of its initiatives.
The DEWA employees' Smart Office app is used to operate the company's equipment. The employee obtains points for each recycling operation once the gadget scans the QR code on the smart app, and these points are then placed into a raffle draw to win important monthly rewards.
DEWA staff recycled 221,900 plastic bottles and aluminium cans between the installation of the smart machines in October 2022 and the end of April 2023. These materials were utilised to make over 11,600 T-shirts and other goods by a local firm utilising sustainable manufacturing techniques.
Environmental preservation and adoption of sustainable practises at home and at work are major priorities for DEWA, which wants to raise awareness of these issues among its staff members and consumers throughout the Year of Sustainability.
The programme supports the circular economy concept and its use in a variety of industries, promoting economic growth and environmental protection at the same time. By recycling resources, cutting waste, and lowering emissions, it also promotes sustainable practises that help fight climate change. The programme is consistent with the Dubai Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2021–2041, which aims to promote innovation in waste management, recycling, and waste–to–energy conversion, as well as to offer workable solutions to environmental problems.
The programme also complies with DEWA's Circular Economy Strategy, which seeks to maximise resource utilisation and enhance social, economic, and environmental value while fostering sustainability in the United Arab Emirates and Dubai. The plan follows five guiding principles: circular design and use of circular materials; optimised asset management; value retention and end-of-life treatment; renewable energy, energy efficiency, and water conservation; and circular partnerships. The plan emphasises DEWA's value chain, which includes engaged suppliers, smart users, and circular procurement.
