Abu Dhabi Police will cut the speed limit on Sweihan Road on Sunday in an effort to boost safety

In an effort to increase safety, Abu Dhabi Police will reduce the posted speed limit on a major route in the emirate on Sunday. The speed limit on Sweihan Road, which runs from Al Falah Bridge to Abu Dhabi International Airport, will drop from 140 kph to 120 kph, according to the police. The Integrated Transport Centre gave their support to the choice. The Abu Dhabi Police urged drivers to adhere to the new speed limit.

As part of its commitment to enhancing road safety, Abu Dhabi often modifies the posted speed limits on its highways. On the stretch of the Abu Dhabi-Al Ain Road between the Al Sad and Al Amera bridges, the posted speed limit was lowered from 160 kph to 140 kph in November. On another major thoroughfare in the capital, Abu Dhabi Police increased the speed limit in September. The speed limit on a portion of the Sheikh Zayed Road would be lowered to 100 kph from 120 kph, according to the police. The new restriction was in effect in both directions at the Qasr Al Bahr junction.

One of the key entrances to the capital from Dubai and the periphery is via this road. Although police usually reduce the posted speed restrictions, a minimum speed limit was recently implemented on a popular transport route to reduce traffic. Since May, drivers on the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road's first two lanes who exceed 120 km/h are subject to a Dh400 fine.

In August 2018, Abu Dhabi eliminated a buffer for posted speed restrictions. The provision, which is still in effect throughout the rest of the nation, permits drivers to exceed official speed limits by up to 20 kph without facing penalties. The Abu Dhabi Police frequently conducts awareness initiatives to increase safety and lower traffic accidents.

In the first half of the year, social media outlets saw more than 35 million views of a force-launched road safety effort. In order to alert vehicles to slow down in bad weather, Abu Dhabi Police finished installing new electronic panels and speed signs on the emirate's key roadways in April. They come on when it's raining, windy, sandstorming, or foggy. The 80 kph speed restriction is flashed on panels, and they also advise drivers to maintain a safe following distance.

In an effort to stress the risks associated with breaching traffic regulations, the police also frequently upload video of actual traffic incidents that have happened on Abu Dhabi's roadways. The brief CCTV movies depict a variety of mishaps to highlight the risks associated with improper driving habits, such as multitasking while driving and abrupt lane changes.
