The first phase of world’s largest waste-to-energy facility in Warsan was inagrated on Tuesday

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, launched the first phase of the world's biggest waste-to-energy factory in Warsan on Tuesday, with a Dh4 billion investment.

According to the Crown Prince, it is a spectacular initiative that cements Dubai's position as a global leader in sustainable infrastructure. "The facility is capable of generating 220 megawatt-hours of renewable energy, which can power 135,000 residential units," he stated in a tweet. The plant can treat 2 million tonnes of garbage every year without negatively impacting the environment. We salute the outstanding teams who worked on this one-of-a-kind project. We are devoted to adopting cutting-edge technology in order to create a better and more sustainable future."

Two of the plant's five lines are already active, processing around 2,300 tonnes of solid waste each day. The complicated method uses steam pressure to generate rotational energy, which drives the generator and generates electricity. At the moment, the plant generates around 80 MWh of renewable energy. With the completion of its second phase, the facility's production is expected to increase to 220 MWh, or 5,280 MWh per day.

The start of operations brings the emirate one step closer to realising its goal of creating the world's greatest sustainable environment. The Centre will make substantial contributions to Dubai's efforts to improve environmental sustainability and mitigate climate change by diverting garbage from landfills and lowering carbon emissions by 2,400 tonnes per year. It will also contribute to increasing the proportion of renewable energy sources in Dubai's energy mix. The plant turns daily garbage created by 3 million people into energy and uses recycled water to generate the steam needed to operate the center's electricity-generating turbine.

The Waste to Energy Centre in Warsan contributes to the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050's goals of sourcing 75% of Dubai's energy needs from clean sources by 2050 and transforming the city into a global clean energy and green economy hub by 2050 by laying the groundwork for a smart, sustainable, and environmentally friendly waste collection, management, and treatment system.

The construction of the landmark project began in 2021, in line with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's vision to raise the emirate's profile as a global model for sustainable development and consolidate its position as the best city to live and work in. The full project is expected to be completed by 2024. With Dubai's population forecast to expand at an increasing rate due to increased economic activity, the project would drastically reduce the potential volume of municipal garbage in landfills and develop alternative energy sources.
