Dubai’s RTA will soon enable public transport commuters to pay their fares through facial recognition

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is advancing smart technology even further by allowing passengers to pay for public transit using face recognition soon. RTA made this announcement today in advance of GITEX 2023, which begins in Dubai tomorrow. At the technology event, the company will provide a display of the smart gate along with several other projects and efforts utilising metaverse and artificial intelligence.

The RTA stand's smart gate will show passengers how to use face recognition to pay for public transit fares. The smart gates will be used to collect fares for buses, taxis, Dubai Metro, Dubai Tram, and marine transportation. It will not be necessary for commuters to utilise credit cards, nol cards, or tickets. The user must register and authenticate in order for the system to work. It uses cameras to identify faces and does 3D analysis on them. After this image has been converted into bio-data that corresponds with the image, the money is taken out of the account.

This programme helps to integrate transport services with other systems, making transaction processing easier, improving service operating efficiency, and decreasing cash transactions. Through the RTA Dubai Drive app, RTA will launch a service that allows owners of car number plates to switch ownership. Customers may use the app to finish the selling process without having to visit any of RTA's service centres by utilising the digital ID "UAE PASS."

The service provides a unique experience by enabling the user to finish the service processes, sign the sales contract securely using an e-signature, complete the sales procedures, and complete the transaction via the smart app. The sales procedures start with enrolling in the system using the digital ID "UAE PASS."

In collaboration with the business sector, RTA will showcase a model of the world's first Abra, created with 3D printing technology. The Abra, which can carry up to 20 people, has environmentally efficient electric motors and has a heritage character that is preserved in its design. This project helps the government realise its goals of achieving Dubai's 3D printing strategy, cutting the production time of Abras by 90%, lowering manufacturing costs by 30%, and bolstering RTA's environmental sustainability plan.

RTA is using big data and artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse transaction and parking inspection data to forecast parking occupancy. Approximately 2.5 million parking reservation transactions and 600,000 inspection transactions are analysed and processed by the AI model, which computes the occupancy every 15 minutes and predicts the parking occupancy every hour for two whole weeks in advance. Through RTA's smart applications, consumers may now plan their travels by using the projected occupancy rates for parking spaces. As part of this endeavour, RTA is also showcasing a congestion index, a driving danger indicator, a smart kiosk, an integrated platform for controlling and monitoring the operations of soft mobility service providers, and passenger movement at stations.
