Dubai: Uber Technologies Inc. has launched its first autonomous ride-hailing service outside the United States in Abu Dhabi, as part of a collaboration with Chinese partner WeRide Inc., according to a Bloomberg report.
The service allows passengers to book autonomous vehicles at standard UberX or Uber Comfort rates in key tourist hotspots of Abu Dhabi, including Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, and the routes connecting Zayed International Airport. The company has plans to gradually expand the service coverage area in the future.
Initially, a safety operator will be present in each autonomous vehicle to ensure a safe and seamless experience for both passengers and pedestrians. This marks the first step towards a fully driverless commercial ride-hailing service, which is set to roll out by late 2025, Uber stated in its official media release.
