UAE will celebrate its Flag Day on Thursday at 11 am, which is now in its 10th year, with schools and workplaces across the country marking the occasion. At 11am, people will briefly stop work to mark the event.
The idea was conceived in 2013 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, to celebrate the accession of Sheikh Khalifa as President in 2004.
It is commemorated every year on the anniversary, November 3. However, it is not a public holiday.
In a tweet reminding residents about the day, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, said: "Our flag will remain raised.. the symbol of our pride and unity will remain... the banner of our pride, glory and sovereignty will remain high in the sky."
The UAE’s national symbols are to be treated with the respect they deserve. Those found insulting or misusing the flag face up to 25 years in jail and/or a Dh500,000 fine.
