UAE’s MoEI launches Energy Management System on Federal Roads; traditional HPS lamps to be replaced with LED lights

The Energy Management System on Federal Roads is a revolutionary project that replaces high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps with LED lights, changing the way roadways are lit. The UAE's Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) announced its commencement. The new artificial intelligence-powered adaptive street lighting system was unveiled at the 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28). It uses sensors mounted on lighting poles to optimise illumination levels and modify lighting intensity on federal roadways.

"The ministry is keen on implementing projects that make our infrastructure, particularly federal roads, sustainable, which improves the UAE's global competitiveness in this field," stated Hassan Mohammed Al Mansouri, Undersecretary of Infrastructure and Transport Affairs at MoEI. MoEI wants to integrate sustainability into its initiatives and alter its operations via the application of best practices.

"The Energy Management System on Federal Roads effectively improves energy efficiency, reduces carbon emissions, and helps mitigate climate change," he continued. "It is a step forward in our drive to conserve energy and safeguard the environment."
