UAE families celebrate Hag Al Laila with children dressed in traditional clothes, enjoying old songs, playing games

Hag Al Laila is a unique event that unites towns and families. Hag Al Laila, also called Qargian, is a custom and cultural legacy that has been passed down through the years and is observed to mark the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan in the UAE and other Gulf nations. It is celebrated on the 15th night of Sha'ban.

In the past, kids in the UAE would sing happy melodies to the elderly while they carried sacks and wandered the streets from afternoon to dusk, gathering candy. At the end of the day, everyone would get together to savour the candies and vibrant handmade beverages. Hag Al Laila is still observed by Emirati families, who dress their kids in traditional attire and have them perform games and sing ancient songs. Additionally, families have continued to give their kids special delicacies like chocolates and nuts and to decorate their houses in vibrant colours.

In honour of Hag Al Laila, the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority will organise legacy events in the ancient area of Al Shindagha. The "Making of Marriya Umm Al Schnaff" jewellery-making class is one of the many events that encourage kids to learn more about the age-old art of jewellery-making. Additional sessions will centre on the history, design, and significance of traditional Emirati clothing in the community. Additionally, youngsters may learn how to mix henna and make their patterns during a henna class.

While going from house to home and singing "Atoona Hag Al Laila," which emphasises the importance of sharing and giving on this auspicious night, kids may also gather presents and candies and take part in well-known games like "Al Karabi" and "Shad Al Habl."
