Teachers cannot offer private tuition to students from their schools

According to reports from the Khaleej Times, teachers are not permitted to charge private tuition to pupils enrolled in their schools. To get a work permit for private tuition, teachers must sign a "code of conduct" that prohibits them from "providing services directly to students affiliated with their schools."

The 7-point paper says that it is vital to disclose any conflict of interest.

The UAE announced a new permission to provide instruction outside of educational institutions in December of last year, at which point it legalised private tuition.

Educators had stated that they would discourage teachers from privately coaching their kids since there may be a conflict of interest when the permission was originally announced. They had expressed doubts about the instructors' capacity to uphold justice or neutrality, particularly in cases involving evaluations.

Private tuition is described as the "practice of providing educational lessons outside of school hours by qualified educators" by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization.

The signed code of conduct is one of the papers that candidates must turn in in order to receive the two-year permission.

When working with pupils, teachers must conduct professionally and abstain from "inappropriate activities such as sending them emails or images." They must also refrain from touching their wards physically.

Furthermore, the document  specifies:

  • Information about parents and students must be kept private.
  • Violence against students, whether verbal or physical, is strictly prohibited.
  • Avoid discussing subjects that involve strange, radical, or beliefs at odds with the state's national identity.

Registered teachers, those already holding jobs, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university pupils are among those who can apply for the permit that’s issued free of charge.

A range of subjects can be taught by private tutors with a permit issued via the MoHRE website and following are the ones included in the list.

  • Languages like English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German etc.
  • Social subjects like history and geography.
  • Business topics like commerce, accounting and economics.
  • Academic subjects like math, physics, chemistry, geology, sociology, food science etc.
  • Arabic and Islamic studies
  • Physical education
  • Dance, music, and theatre.
  • Art and design
  • Film and video production, graphic design, and multimedia

The permit attempts to stop unlicensed and unlawful private tuition as parents look for instructors to assist their kids' education. There will be fines and penalties for anybody found providing private instruction without permission. The MoHRE app and website are the places where qualified parties may apply for permission.

The qualifications change according to the applicant. These are some of the documents that could be needed, among others:

  • Valid UAE residency (passport/Emirates ID)
  • Certificate of good conduct
  • Signed code of conduct
  • Experience certificate (if any)
  • No-objection certificate from the employer
  • No-objection certificate from the guardian (for students looking to offer private tuition)
