Over 22 million square metres of gardens, grass cover and trees greens the Sharjah city

Sharjah city has been greened with nearly 22 million square metres of gardens, grass cover, and trees, according to the emirate's administration. The city's green space has been expanding at a rate of 12% each year, "which contributes to purifying the air and addressing the challenges of climate change," the civic body said in a statement on Wednesday. Several projects, including a garden and a library, have utilised recycled materials.Furthermore, roadway signs constructed of used tyres have been created. 

Sharjah's civic council oversees 68 gardens. In 2022, city nurseries might generate up to 17 million blooms. According to Al Tunaiji, one of the authority's sustainable projects is the administration and development of wastewater infrastructure. This contributes to the production of high-quality treated water and organic fertilisers from sludge generated by treatment operations and agricultural waste.

Sharjah generates around 72 million cubic metres of treated water each year, and the municipality operates many wastewater treatment plants. The processed water plants satisfy the irrigation demands of the emirate's agricultural projects, improving the emirate's green reputation. The Sharjah City Municipality's plant produced 78,000 tonnes of fertiliser in 2022. The municipality debuted its organic fertiliser manufacturing plant this year, which turns sewage sludge into high-quality fertilisers.

Sharjah Municipality has changed a "large number" of billboards to run on solar electricity. The town also harnesses the power of the sun to illuminate a number of public parks. To cut carbon emissions, the city has also begun employing Adblue technology in its cars.
