NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery has unveiled an exhibition weaving together art, science, and sustainability

The NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) Art Gallery has revealed an exhibition that blurs the lines between art, science, and sustainability. Horizon, inspired by the nature of the UAE, takes viewers on a transforming trip as the country prepares to host COP28 and celebrates the Year of Sustainability. Leading up to COP28, acclaimed artist and sculptor Blane De St. Croix began a year-long residence at The Art Gallery. During this time, he engaged in talks with faculty members, residents, and climate specialists, as well as actively participating in environmental debates.

A thorough overview of De St. Croix's work has been exhibited, drawing from ecosystems all around the world, but it is the UAE that takes centre stage. Among the main new pieces on show, "Salt Lake Excerpt" is the apex of his partnership with theatrical artist Joanna Settle, an arts professor and associate dean at NYUAD. This installation, inspired by the UAE's salt lakes, or "sabkhas," is a mix of light, music, and sculpture made of 50,000 recycled plastic water bottles. The exhibition also includes a 'Infinite landscapes' series that focuses on the UAE's deserts. Another work, 'High peaks: Himachal,' shows Mount Everest and other peaks as symbols of climate change issues, based on conversations with social sciences and humanities academics who study the Himalayas.

The Universities Climate Network (UCN), which includes 31 higher education institutions in the UAE, is led by NYU Abu Dhabi. The network's goal is to encourage COP28-related talks, seminars, public events, and youth engagement.

The exhibition will be taking place till January 14, 2024.
