New platform has been launched wherein the public can propose names for roads and streets across Dubai

A new website has been launched to allow the public to suggest names for streets and roads around Dubai. Under the direction of Dubai Municipality, the Dubai Road Naming Committee (DRNC) is leading the Street Designation Proposal. This is an endeavor aimed at enhancing community involvement in proposing names for the emirate's streets and highways.

Heritage names that reflect the history, heritage, values, social and cultural riches, and consistency with future growth and orientation of the emirate are to be revived, together with national identity and traits that are highlighted.

In a trial phase, the committee named roads in the Al Khawaneej 2 region. Some of the names it chose were Ghaf Street, which was inspired by local trees, plants, and flowers. Streets named Sidr, Reehan, Faghi, Samer, and Shareesh were also named after trees.

People may link the names, signage, and location information of a place with their mental image. This new method will provide street names with a distinctive personality that will facilitate the smooth navigation of destinations with the new addressing system.

A system for recommending road names based on area-specific categories has been developed by the DRNC. These include names connected to art, culture, Arabic poetic prosody, and Arabic and Islamic architecture and design.

Along with the names of wild and marine birds, it will also include names of natural occurrences, local plants, trees, flowers, and marine and wild vegetation. It will also encompass names associated with fishing, winds, rain, ships, maritime gear, and environmental sustainability.

The classifications will also contain names of squares, forts, historic castles, and archaeological sites along with names and descriptions of Arabian camels and horses, Names of date palms and other palm varieties, names of farming and agricultural vocations, names of gemstones, names of current innovations and technology, and names of artisanal and industrial professions and their implements will all be included.

The Executive Council Resolution No. (35) of 2021 created the Dubai Road Naming Committee, which is headed by the Dubai Municipality Director General. The CEOs of the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Centre, the Traffic and Roads Agency at the RTA, the Director General of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, and four knowledgeable and seasoned representatives of Dubai residents—Mrs. Abdullah Thani Al Mataroushi, Mr. Hameed Sultan Al Matyouai, Mr. Juma Bin Thalith, and Mr. Rashid Boukhash—are among them.
