New insurance scheme announced for Indian workers in the UAE

A new insurance plan that guarantees the families of Indian workers in the UAE would get up to Dh75,000 in compensation in the event of the worker's death, whether from natural causes or accidents, has been unveiled. The programme, known as the Life Protection Plan (LPP), went into effect on March 1st, the Indian Consulate in Dubai said on Tuesday.

According to the embassy, the LPP was created to close a gap in employment benefits for the 2.27 million blue-collar workers in the UAE. While many employers offer health insurance and pay for fatalities and injuries sustained on the job, there is no mandated coverage in place for employees who pass away naturally. This implies that if the breadwinner in the family passes away, many workers' families may be left in the dark and unable to pay for their repatriation.

In order to resolve this matter, the Indian Consulate organised a conference between two insurance service providers and significant UAE employers seeking blue-collar labour.

The insurance plan is available to those between the ages of 18 and 70, with yearly costs ranging from Dh37 to Dh72.

Depending on the chosen premium, beneficiaries may get compensation ranging from Dh35,000 to Dh75,000 in the event that a worker passes away from an accident or natural causes.

The plan also covers the repatriation of the covered employee's remains up to Dh 12,000 in value.

After working on a package designed especially for blue-collar workers, two insurance firms discussed the terms and conditions with the hiring agencies.

This is a summary of the policy:

  • The payout is Dh75,000 for the policy with a yearly premium of Dh72.
  • It costs Dh50 year, or Dh50,000.
  • It's Dh35,000 for Dh37.

The Indian Consulate said that of the 3.5 million Indians residing in the United Arab Emirates, almost 65% are blue-collar workers.

1,100 of the 1,750 fatalities in Dubai that the mission documented in 2022 were workers. In 2023, a similar pattern was seen, with 1,000 worker fatalities out of 1,513. Natural causes were cited as the cause of more than 90% of these fatalities.
