Sharjah authorities have disclosed that the proposed great national park to be developed from the Mleiha desert will be a sustainable reserve that safeguards the region's 200,000-year history.
The creation of the Mleiha National Park, according to Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), "reinforces Sharjah and Shurooq's commitment to championing sustainability and preserving the UAE's and the region's rich historical heritage for generations to come."
The emirate of Sharjah will welcome Mleiha National Park, a first-of-its-kind protected area that encourages the preservation of Sharjah's archaeological heritage and natural history.
His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the ruler of Sharjah and a member of the Supreme Council, issued Emiri Decree No. 16 of 2024 earlier this week, authorizing the development of a national park within the 34 square kilometer desert in the central region of Sharjah, where archaeologists have discovered the oldest evidence of human occupation outside of Africa.
It also forbids engaging in recreational and amusement pursuits or sports that could endanger, kill, or negatively impact wildlife; building structures or roads; operating automobiles or other modes of transportation; or engaging in any industrial, commercial, or agricultural activity within the park without a permit issued by the emirate's competent authority in compliance with guidelines, regulations, and procedures decided upon by its president.
