Employers in UAE cannot hire, terminate, or restrict job opportunities for residents over a mental health condition as per new law

A new law has been approved that prohibits employers in the United Arab Emirates from discriminating against, firing, or limiting employment chances for citizens based solely on their mental health status.

This is similar to the prohibition on employing or discharging employees based solely on their physical condition. Employees are entitled to 90 days of paid and unpaid sick leave; they won't be fired unless they can't report to work after that.

The United Arab Emirates last month passed a federal mental health law that, among other things, protects sufferers' unrestricted ability to continue working. This part of the law encourages people to put their mental health first without worrying about losing their careers.

The relationship between patients and those who interact with them, such as carers, employers, and educational institutions, is governed by legislation. Those found to be in violation will face fines ranging from Dh50,000 to Dh200,000.

The legal definition of mental health includes all facets of emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It is defined as a condition of psychological and social stability.
