The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has announced an exciting Dhs550 million system overhaul, confirming that using a smartphone to pay for the Dubai Metro would soon be possible.
On its official social media accounts, the RTA announced that the transformative project is 40% finished and will witness the switch from the outdated card-based ticketing system to the more sophisticated account-based ticketing (ABT) technology.
Users will be able to create digital profiles that link to their current Nol cards in the first phase of the enormous project, which is divided into "three key phases."
To guarantee compatibility with banking card technology, a new generation of nol cards will be introduced in the second phase.
Alternative payment options, such as digital wallets and bank cards, will be accepted in the last stage.
