Dubai announced the launch of one of the world's largest marine reef developments - Dubai Reef project

A significant step towards ecological preservation has been taken with the announcement of the start of the Dubai Reef project by Dubai. This is one of the biggest marine reef projects in the world. The Dubai Reef project was initiated under the directives of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council. The initiative will be overseen by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), in collaboration with Dubai Chambers, the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), and Nakheel, as well as the Regulatory Committee on Fishing of Living Aquatic Resources in Dubai, an original partner.

The project is a component of the city's initiatives to promote sustainable fishing, expand fish stocks, and enhance food security. The Dubai Reef project is also expected to have a significant impact on both marine biodiversity and carbon emissions reduction. The historic project is expected to further solidify Dubai's standing as one of the top three global cities as the city works to fulfil the goals stated in the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, to raise Dubai's status as a leading sustainable metropolis.

Sheikh Hamdan emphasised that the UAE's top objectives include protecting the environment, protecting animals, and fostering biodiversity. These goals are in line with the strategic plan to become carbon neutral by 2050. He also underlined the need for a focused and increased commitment to initiating high-impact initiatives and promoting the adoption of best practises that guarantee environmental sustainability and safety for future generations in order to protect the continuity and quality of human existence.

The initiative is being launched at the same time that Expo City Dubai is holding the 28th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) from November 30 to December 12. The Dubai Reef project showcases Dubai's dedication to the conservation and enhancement of marine biodiversity, as well as its goal of becoming a world-class sustainable city. Examples of this dedication include the 'Dubai Can' citywide sustainability campaign.
