Ban on single-use bags will come into effect in less than three months in Dubai

In less than three months, single-use bags—paper and plastic—will be prohibited throughout the whole city of Dubai. Businesses in the emirate were forced to impose a 25-fil cost on single-use plastic bags earlier this year.

All single-use bags for carrying items are covered by the policy, and consumers are urged to bring their own reusable bags. The Dubai Municipality has made it clear that because biodegradable bags need specific recycling facilities, they are also prohibited. Biodegradable bags have the potential to decompose into microplastics in landfills, which can be hazardous to the environment.

There are some bags that are not prohibited:

- Wrapping bags for vegetables, meats, fish, and chicken

- Bags for products packaged online

- Electronic device bags

- Trash bin liners

- Garbage bags

- Laundry bags

- Bread bags

- Grain bags

A Dh200 fine will be assessed for breaking the policy; this charge will double for further infractions, up to a maximum of Dh2,000. Customers are urged to notify the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism of infractions.

The Dubai Municipality has responded to inquiries from customers and companies about the prohibition by publishing an extensive guide that is accessible online in both Arabic and English. Along with advice on implementing sustainable practices, the guide provides eco-friendly substitutes for plastics.
