Four autonomous cars will race at the Yas Marina Circuit on Saturday. The Aspire Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) will feature eight teams competing for a $2.25 million prize pool. More than 10,000 people are anticipated to attend the competition's inaugural season, which represents a momentous milestone in motorsport history and is billed as the world's largest league of its kind.
The eight teams competing in the event includes Fly Eagle representing Beijing Institute of Technology from China and Khalifa University, Code19 Racing from the US, Constructor University based in Germany and Switzerland, HUMDA Lab – a member of the Szechenyi Istvan University Group from Hungary), PoliMOVE representing Politecnico di Milano from Italy, KINETIZ – a collaboration between Singapore Nanyang Technological University and Kintsugi based in the UAE, UNIMORE from Italy – University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, and Technical University of Munich – TUM from Germany.
The participating coding and engineering teams will have exclusive access to identical Dallara Super Formula SF23 vehicles, thanks to a partnership with Japan Race Promotions. The Technology Innovation Institute (TII) will build and integrate autonomous racing stacks to enable these cars to drive themselves. The only variation is how each team uses its coding talents, AI algorithms, and machine learning software development expertise to train its cars how to drive. These cars, currently recognized as the fastest open-wheel race car in the world after Formula One, can attain speeds of up to 300kmph.
