Abu Dhabi named as Arab Environment Capital for 2023 by the Secretariat General of the Arab League and the Council of Arab Environment Ministers

The Council of Arab Environment Ministers and the Secretariat General of the Arab League have designated Abu Dhabi as the Arab Environment Capital for 2023. The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) led the organization in recognizing the emirate's accomplishments over a number of years in environmental preservation and climate action.

At the 34th session of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment in Muscat, the UAE declared 2023 to be the Year of Sustainability with the slogan "Today for Tomorrow," and the UAE hosted COP28. Abu Dhabi emerged victorious in this competition.

The Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), the Abu Dhabi Sustainable Water Solutions Company (ADSWS), the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA), the Abu Dhabi Waste Management Company Tadweer, and the Department of Energy (DOE) collaborated with the agency to prepare its award submission.

Abu Dhabi is putting its comprehensive strategy for low-emission cars, land transportation, and traffic control into action. The Integrated Land Transportation Plan was created in 2009 in order to address the environmental, social, and economic objectives of the city. It underwent updates in 2017 and 2022.

The plan calls for cutting carbon emissions through the development of renewable energy-based public transportation infrastructure, the implementation of cutting-edge solar-powered bus operating systems, and the promotion of the use of bicycles and other alternative forms of transportation.

Abu Dhabi has worked hard to stop wind and erosion-related land degradation. It has done this by planting forests to keep sand from encroaching on existing land and limiting its negative effects on air pollution and green spaces. Additionally, strategic plans have been created to assist metropolitan areas in mitigating and adapting to climate change. Abu Dhabi's Plan Maritime was created to safeguard coastal regions and sustainably conserve their maritime habitats and resources.
